Complete 3-Day Itinerary From Marrakech to Merzouga
Outlined below is the tour itinerary of the 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour:
Day 1: From Marrakech to Dades Valley
The 3-day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga begins with a prompt 8:30 am pickup. Our guide meets you directly at your accommodation.
We leave the city behind and begin our climb into the High Atlas Mountains, taking the winding road across the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters (7,415 feet). We’ll pause at a viewpoint so you can take photos and enjoy the fresh mountain air.
Our first stop is the historic village of Ait Benhaddou. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has served as the backdrop for films like Gladiator, The Mummy, and parts of Game of Thrones. You’ll have time to explore the kasbah before a relaxed lunch nearby.
After lunch, we continue toward Ouarzazate, the “gateway to the Sahara.” We’ll visit the Taourirt Kasbah and drive past Atlas Studios, one of Morocco’s largest film production centers.
The journey continues south through the palm groves of Skoura and the Valley of Roses, a region known for its rose-water cooperatives in spring. By late afternoon, we’ll reach the Dades Valley, home to the striking red rock formations called “Monkey Fingers.” You can relax and enjoy dinner at a comfortable hotel or riad suited to your preferences.
Day 2: From Dades Valley to Erg Chebbi
After breakfast, we continue our drive through the Dades Valley, following its winding road lined with kasbahs and palm groves.
By late morning, we reach Tinghir and enter the Todra Gorge, where limestone walls rise about 300 meters. We explore the canyon on foot and pause for mint tea by the river. The gorge is also a popular climbing area, so you might see climbers on the cliffs.
Next, we drive past palm oases toward Erfoud to visit a local fossil workshop. Inside, you’ll see Devonian ammonites and orthoceras in polished marble slabs, and learn how artisans carefully cut and finish these ancient stones.
We’ll have a relaxed lunch along the way and drive to Merzouga early for the camel trek. It’s one of the signature moments of the tour you don’t want to miss!
By mid-afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga. The camels are ready for a sunset ride into the dunes. At the desert camp, you can try sandboarding, enjoy a warm dinner with traditional Berber music, and settle into your private tent under the stars.
Day 3: From Merzouga Desert to Marrakech
We wake up before dawn to watch the sunrise over Erg Chebbi and return by camel for breakfast and a refreshing shower.
Next, we leave the desert and begin our journey back to Marrakech along a different route. Our first stop is Draa Valley, known for its long stretches of palm groves and several old kasbahs along the river.
We continue toward the traditional Berber villages of N’kob and Agdz. Wandering the mud-brick houses and small markets, here you can picture everyday life in southern Morocco.
After lunch along the way, we drive through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass in the High Atlas Mountains and arrive in Marrakech by evening.
