Complete 3-Day Itinerary From Marrakech to Merzouga

Outlined below is the tour itinerary of the 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour:

Day 1: From Marrakech to Dades Valley

The 3-day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga begins with a prompt 8:30 am pickup. Our guide meets you directly at your accommodation.

We leave the city behind and begin our climb into the High Atlas Mountains, taking the winding road across the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters (7,415 feet). Weโ€™ll pause at a viewpoint so you can take photos and enjoy the fresh mountain air.

Our first stop is the historic village of Ait Benhaddou. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has served as the backdrop for films like Gladiator, The Mummy, and parts of Game of Thrones. Youโ€™ll have time to explore the kasbah before a relaxed lunch nearby.

After lunch, we continue toward Ouarzazate, the โ€œgateway to the Sahara.โ€ Weโ€™ll visit the Taourirt Kasbah and drive past Atlas Studios, one of Moroccoโ€™s largest film production centers.

The journey continues south through the palm groves of Skoura and the Valley of Roses, a region known for its rose-water cooperatives in spring. By late afternoon, weโ€™ll reach the Dades Valley, home to the striking red rock formations called โ€œMonkey Fingers.โ€ You can relax and enjoy dinner at a comfortable hotel or riad suited to your preferences.

Day 2: From Dades Valley to Erg Chebbi

After breakfast, we continue our drive through the Dades Valley, following its winding road lined with kasbahs and palm groves.

By late morning, we reach Tinghir and enter the Todra Gorge, where limestone walls rise about 300 meters. We explore the canyon on foot and pause for mint tea by the river. The gorge is also a popular climbing area, so you might see climbers on the cliffs.

Next, we drive past palm oases toward Erfoud to visit a local fossil workshop. Inside, youโ€™ll see Devonian ammonites and orthoceras in polished marble slabs, and learn how artisans carefully cut and finish these ancient stones.

Weโ€™ll have a relaxed lunch along the way and drive to Merzouga early for the camel trek. Itโ€™s one of the signature moments of the tour you donโ€™t want to miss!

By mid-afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga. The camels are ready for a sunset ride into the dunes. At the desert camp, you can try sandboarding, enjoy a warm dinner with traditional Berber music, and settle into your private tent under the stars.

Day 3: From Merzouga Desert to Marrakech

We wake up before dawn to watch the sunrise over Erg Chebbi and return by camel for breakfast and a refreshing shower.

Next, we leave the desert and begin our journey back to Marrakech along a different route. Our first stop is Draa Valley, known for its long stretches of palm groves and several old kasbahs along the river.

We continue toward the traditional Berber villages of Nโ€™kob and Agdz. Wandering the mud-brick houses and small markets, here you can picture everyday life in southern Morocco.

After lunch along the way, we drive through the Tizi nโ€™Tichka Pass in the High Atlas Mountains and arrive in Marrakech by evening.

my friend and I booked 15 days private tour. It included all transportation in air conditioned car, desert camp, 2 local guided tours, all hotels, all transfers all breakfasts and few other meals.
what we got:
- car did not have good working AC. Most of the times we had open windows!
- our driver was not a guide, so not much information was passed to us while in the car.
- several times we were not driven to the hotel, but had to walk from medina gates to hotel and was told to pay for transferring our luggage. This was going on untill we showed our contract stating that all these is included. No, we did not get our money back.
- with the few exceptions, we were staying in Medinas. Some hotels were nice, some OK, but few simply horrible. Non working AC, broken safe, dirty and filthy. One hotel was so awful that we refused to stay in it: no working AC, no light in the sink area, shower stall completely covered with mold, electrical switch sticking out from the wall....Last drop was on out last day: our driver asked if he can leave us ( it was a holiday comming up and he wanted help his family to prepare) and call taxi to drive us to the airport next day. We agreed, but put one condition: taxi must have AC. He promise. Next day when taxi came, I asked about AC and driver say "Yes". When we got in a car, he open the window. When I asked to turn AC on, he pointed to the window....
Said - the person we corresponded with while booking and up to travel time) never met us.
