Complete itinerary of 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour

Below is the complete tour itinerary of the 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour:

Day 1: From Marrakech to Dades Valley

We begin our journey from Marrakech in the morning and head toward the High Atlas Mountains. As we climb, the weather gets cooler, and the road winds through small villages.

Our route crosses the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters (7,415 feet), one of Morocco’s highest paved roads. We’ll stop briefly along the way for photos and refreshments before continuing toward the desert side of the mountains.

By midday, we reach Ait Benhaddou, a centuries-old ksar built from red earth and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s one of Morocco’s best-preserved examples of southern architecture and a well-known film location. You’ll have time to explore and enjoy lunch nearby.

In the afternoon, we continue to Ouarzazate, known for its film studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. From here, we drive through Skoura oasis and the Valley of Roses before reaching the Dades Valley by sunset. You’ll spend the night in a comfortable local riad or hotel and enjoy dinner.

Day 2: From Dades Valley to Merzouga

We leave the Dades Valley after breakfast and drive toward Tinghir. Our first stop is the Todra Gorge, where 300-meter-tall limestone cliffs surround the canyon. You’ll have time to walk through the gorge and take a short break before we continue.

Next, we pass through small Berber towns such as Tinjdad, Jorf, and Erfoud. Along the way, you’ll see date palms, local markets, and desert landscapes as we head closer to the Sahara.

By afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga. Here, we switch to camels for a ride across the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Watching the sunset from the saddle is one of the most peaceful parts of the tour.

The day ends at a desert camp set among the dunes. You’ll enjoy a warm Berber dinner by the fire, listen to traditional drumming under the open night sky, and settle into your private tent for the night.

Day 3: Merzouga Desert Exploration

We start early to watch the sunrise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi. After breakfast at the camp, we return to Merzouga by camel.

Later, we explore the area around Erg Chebbi—a vast stretch of golden sand and Morocco’s largest dune. We’ll also take the “Paris-Dakar” road, known for its rugged desert tracks.

In Khamlia Village, you’ll be welcomed with tea and live Gnawa music. This traditional, rhythmic music reflects a mix of African and Berber influences unique to this region.

Next, we visit Mefis, an old village with abandoned lead mines from the French colonial period. You’ll also meet nomadic families who live in the desert, learning about their lifestyle and traditions.

By late afternoon, we return to Merzouga. You’ll have free time to relax, explore the town, or walk in the dunes before dinner and an overnight stay at a local hotel.

Day 4: From Merzouga Desert to Fes

After breakfast at Merzouga, we start driving through the Tafilalet palm grove. Our first stop is the Ziz Valley, where green palms stretch between rugged desert hills.

We continue toward Midelt, a small town between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains. It’s a pleasant place to stop for lunch and enjoy the cool mountain air.

In the afternoon, we drive through the Cedar Forest of Azrou. This is one of Morocco’s largest cedar woodlands, and you might spot Barbary apes among the trees.

Our next stop is Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” for its clean streets and alpine-style buildings. It’s a quiet, charming town, a complete contrast to the desert we’ve just left behind.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Fes, where the journey ends with drop-off at your accommodation.

Book your trip!!! Best experience ever! I went with my husband and daughter and can’t thank Mohamed enough for such an amazing experience. We booked an 8-day trip though Morocco, he picked us up at the airport and was with us every step of the way! Gave us advice and was very flexible. Added extra cappuccino stops for us 🥰 Everything felt so safe. Said will also respond immediately if you have any last minute changes, after we arrived at the dessert for our campsite overnight stay I realized I hadn’t included the AC, within minutes he had contacted the owners and we had AC. He planned our entire trip which included all the Riads, food, tours, etc! Gives you multiple choices to choose from, from normal to luxury Riads, we added a 1-hr ATV tour through the desert at sunset and camel ride which are both a must! I just can’t speak highly enough of the service. Thank you Mohamed and Said!
