Complete Itinerary For 4 Days Tour From Fes to Marrakech
The complete itinerary for the 4-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech:
Day 1: From Fes to Erg Chebbi Dunes
We leave Fes and start driving through Azrou and the Middle Atlas Mountains. The road passes cedar forests, and you may spot Barbary apes along the way. The scenery shifts between green valleys and rocky hills as we continue south.
We stop in Midelt, a quiet town known for its orchards and mountain views. It’s a good break to stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh air before continuing the drive.
The route continues through the Tizi Ntalghamt Pass and toward the Ziz Valley, a wide stretch of palm groves by the Ziz River. We stop here for lunch and a short break before continuing.
In the afternoon, we stop at a viewpoint near the dunes to watch the sunset, a memorable experience on the tour. Afterward, we continue straight to Merzouga, where you’ll settle into your hotel or riad for the night.
Day 2: Merzouga Exploration & Camel Trek
We start the day in Merzouga and visit the nearby Gnawa village to hear traditional music and learn about local culture. It’s a straightforward stop that offers a quick look into local life.
From there, we head to the Mefis mines. These old lead mines are no longer active, but the remaining structures show how important the site once was for the region.
We then continue toward the desert to meet Bedouin families for tea. It’s a relaxed visit and a chance to hear about their nomadic lifestyle. After that, there’s an optional visit to Merzouga Lake (Dayet Srij). When there’s water, this seasonal lake sometimes attracts flamingos and other birds.
In the afternoon, we start our camel ride into the dunes. The camels take us toward the Erg Chebbi sands for a sunset ride. After sunset, we arrive at the desert camp for dinner and an overnight stay in your tent.
Day 3: From Erg Chebbi to Dades Valley
We start the morning early to catch the sunrise over the dunes. It’s a calm moment and a nice way to experience the desert before breakfast at the camp.
Afterward, we leave Merzouga and begin the drive toward the Todra Gorge. The road passes through small villages, farmlands, and tall cliffs. Once at the gorge, you can take a short walk along the river or simply relax by the water.
Later in the afternoon, we continue to the Dades Valley. This area is known for its mountain views and unique rock formations. By evening, we arrive at your hotel in the valley, where you’ll have dinner and stay the night.
Day 4: From Dades Valley back to Marrakesh
We begin the day with a visit to Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO-listed ksar known for its earthen buildings and old caravan routes. You can walk through the narrow alleys, explore the towers, and see why it has been featured in many films.
From here, we continue to the Telouet Kasbah. This former palace is located along the old trade road; a good stop for photos and a look into Morocco’s past.
Next, we drive toward the High Atlas Mountains, where we cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest road pass (2,205 m) in North Africa. Enjoy mountain views, small Berber villages, and changing landscapes as we approach Marrakech.
By late afternoon, we arrive in the city and drop you off at your accommodation, marking the end of the trip.

FAQs Answered
Do I need a sleeping bag for the overnight in the desert?
No, you don’t need to bring a sleeping bag. The desert camps, whether standard or luxury, are well-prepared with comfortable bedding and warm blankets. However, it can get cold at night, especially in the winter months, so bringing an extra layer for warmth, like a jacket, is advisable.
What type of vehicles do you use?
We use modern, air-conditioned 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers, Minivans, or minibuses, depending on the group size.
Are there bathrooms in the desert camp?
Yes. Standard camps have shared facilities, while Luxury camps feature private ensuite bathrooms
Is the road difficult or winding?
You will cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m). The roads are well-maintained but winding; if you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend bringing appropriate medication.
